Bangladeshis Head to Polls in National Parliament Election

(MENAFN) Polling stations across Bangladesh opened Thursday morning as the South Asian nation launched its first parliamentary elections since political upheaval forced Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to step down in August 2024.

Over 127 million registered voters are expected to participate in the massive democratic exercise, which kicked off at 7:30 a.m. local time across more than 42,000 polling centers nationwide. Voting will conclude at 4:30 p.m. local time, officials confirmed.

Eager voters formed lengthy lines outside Dhaka polling stations Wednesday night, hours before ballot boxes opened. Miraz Ahmed, a first-time Gen Z voter, expressed enthusiasm to Xinhua Wednesday evening: "This is my first time voting, and I'm really excited."

"I'm getting my voter number from this help desk so tomorrow morning I can go straight into the polling station without waiting," he said.

The Election Commission reported that 2,028 candidates are competing for 299 of the 300 directly-elected parliamentary seats. Elections for the remaining constituency have been postponed following a candidate's death.

The contest represents Bangladesh's inaugural general election since Hasina's resignation amid widespread political turmoil that gripped the nation last summer.

Under Bangladesh's parliamentary system, a party must secure a minimum of 151 seats to form a government. Election authorities announced that vote tallying will commence immediately at polling sites once voting wraps up.
